SPONGE STREETS AND SIDEWALKS
Montreal is transforming vulnerable neighbourhoods by tackling heat islands and expanding access to green
spaces and recreational facilities. The city is involving communities in the planning so that they can
prevent gentrification and ensure that
all residents enjoy their
surroundings.
RESILIENT AND INCLUSIVE NEIGHBOURHOODS
The city is reimagining our streets to prioritize all types of sustainable transportation. A greener, safer city means walking, biking and public transit routes. Montreal is
also expanding tramways and bike paths and
creating extensive pedestrian networks, so
everyone has access to our services
and attractions.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
Montreal is taking steps to increase the presence of nature and biodiversity. Protecting green spaces, restoring industrial land, planting more trees and better
planning and management will increase
our flood-resistance and improve
Montrealers’ quality of life.
BIODIVERSITY
The city is improving our resilience to heavy rainfall by innovating public spaces. They have already created
seven sponge parks and 800 sponge sidewalks, with
more being built. The vegetation absorbs
stormwater and takes the load off our
sewers, and they’re also
cost-effective.
